The Rickshaw Run is not just about having a spiffingly good adventure; it's also about raising money for a great cause. Rural India is home to some of the most poverty stricken people in the whole of Asia. We are working to raise money for Mercy Corps who are involved in many grass roots projects in India.
Rickshaw drivers also have a hard life in India. Many have to rent their rickshaws or take out a loan to buy one. It is the norm that the lending rates are extortionate, amounting to a huge percentage of their possible daily earnings. The driver becomes trapped working ridiculous hours to cover the loan or hire and earning barely enough to live off.
In addition to the great work that Mercy Corps are doing in India they will be working with the Rickshaw Run organisers to get the Rickshaws from the event to worthy owners, thus freeing a rickshaw driver from the shackles of unrealistic loans and rickshaw rental.
